Prof. Jason Mackenzie (University of Melbourne, Doherty Institute, Melbourne, Australia) is an international expert on the intracellular replication of flaviviruses, particularly West Nile, Zika and Dengue viruses. His research team has developed many reagents including infectious virus clones, replicons and virus-like particles that will be used within the project. He utilises these tools to address critical questions around the cell biology of virus infection and has identified and characterised the viral replication complex at a biochemical and ultrastructural level. He has also shown how various host lipids and cellular responses contribute to the establishment of virus replication in cells. Within REFINE, Prof. Mackenzie will collaborate with all partners but in particular with Dr Giuseppe Balisteri (UH, Finland) on the identification of virus receptors and virus entry; Dr. Merja Joensuu (UQ, Australia) on state-of-the art single-molecule imaging, Dr Florian Schmidt (UBonn, Germany) on the development of nanobodies to viral and cellular components and Dr Sarah Butcher (UH, Finland) on the molecular structure of virus and virus-like particles and protein/antibody interactions. Prof Mackenzie was CIB on NHMRC-EU Collaborative Research Grant 2044271, associated with this application.
